What to do when your job asks you to compromise your values.

A place to begin

Clarify exactly what you are being asked to do and why it concerns you. Identify the standard at issue, explain the conflict calmly, and propose a truthful alternative where possible. If the request remains serious or unresolved, seek appropriate guidance before acting. Faithfulness does not require agreeing to something you believe is wrong to preserve approval.

The momentCheck what the task involves.

Distinguish a genuine ethical concern from an assumption that more information may resolve.

The request may sound small: leave out a fact, sign off on work that is unfinished, or present a result more favorably than the evidence allows. You worry that asking a question will make you look difficult.

Start by making the request precise. A misunderstanding, a difference of judgment, and a demand for dishonesty are not the same situation.

Name the actual conflict

Ask for clarification in ordinary language: 'Are you asking me to mark this complete before it has been checked?' Then state the specific concern. Focus on truth, safety, fairness, or the relevant professional standard rather than making a broad judgment about the person's character.

Examine your own understanding too. A task can feel uncomfortable without being wrong. Seek informed counsel when the issue is technical or unfamiliar, and avoid presenting a personal preference as though every Christian must share it.

Look for an honest path forward

Offer a workable alternative: report what is finished, identify the remaining check, or explain the limitation clearly to the customer. The goal is to meet the legitimate need without misrepresenting the facts.

If pressure continues, use the appropriate manager, professional, or reporting channel. Serious legal, safety, or employment questions need qualified guidance for your circumstances. Do not rely on an article or an app to decide those obligations, and do not copy or disclose confidential records casually while seeking advice.

Scripture in context

Open a passage to read the Bible text and its surrounding chapter here on AskJesus. The notes below explain how it connects with this question; they are reflections, not Bible quotations.

Proverbs 11:1

The proverb condemns dishonest measures in trade. Fair dealing concerns the ordinary practices through which people represent value and exchange goods.

Daniel 1:8-16

Daniel raises a specific conviction respectfully and proposes an alternative within his circumstances. The account illustrates thoughtful courage, not a guarantee that every principled request will receive the same outcome.

Acts 5:29

The apostles address a direct conflict between obedience to God and an order forbidding their witness. Applying the principle today requires care about whether a real moral conflict exists.

A faithful next stepExplain a workable alternative.

Where possible, offer a way to meet the legitimate goal without doing the harmful part.

  1. Clarify the instruction

Ask what action is expected. Do not decide the issue solely from an ambiguous phrase or assumption.

  2. Identify the standard

Name the truth, responsibility, or professional requirement at stake and check your understanding.

  3. Offer a truthful alternative

Explain how the legitimate goal might be met without the action that concerns you.

  4. Seek the right guidance

If the issue persists or has serious consequences, involve someone qualified to advise on the actual situation.

Pause & pray

A prayer for this moment

Father, give me clarity about what is right and humility where I need to learn. Help me speak truthfully under pressure, seek wise counsel, and act with courage without becoming reckless or self-righteous. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

A question to sit with

What exactly am I being asked to do, and which specific responsibility would that action violate?

Common questions

Should I quit immediately if a request troubles my conscience?

Not every concern requires an immediate resignation. Clarify the facts and seek appropriate counsel about the seriousness of the issue and your options. Urgent safety concerns may require a prompt response through the proper channel.

What if everyone says this is normal?

Common practice does not settle whether something is truthful or fair. Ask for the relevant standard and evaluate the actual request rather than relying only on group approval.

If the concern remains serious, seek qualified advice and a safe reporting route rather than carrying it alone.
