What to do when God feels distant.

A place to begin

Tell God honestly that he feels distant, and keep your next step simple: a short passage, a brief prayer, and contact with a trustworthy person. A lack of strong spiritual feeling is not proof that God has abandoned you. Consider what is happening in your life without rushing to assign a single spiritual explanation.

The momentStay honest about this season.

Uncertainty can be brought into a trustworthy conversation without rushing to an explanation.

You still believe, but prayer feels flat. A song that once moved you now feels ordinary. Reading the Bible may seem difficult to begin, and you wonder whether everyone around you is experiencing something you have lost.

Spiritual dryness can be confusing because you cannot create closeness by deciding to feel it. You may also carry shame about the struggle, which makes it harder to tell anyone. Begin by making room for an honest description of your experience.

A feeling is real without being the whole verdict

Psalm 13 opens with the writer asking how long God will seem absent. The Psalm gives that experience words within Scripture itself. It does not require the person praying to deny the loneliness before turning toward God.

You can say, ‘I feel far from God,’ while leaving open the question of what that feeling means. It may be connected with disappointment, distraction, exhaustion, grief, neglected habits, or a question you have avoided. There is no need to declare that God is punishing you or testing you when you do not know that.

Look at your whole life with honesty and kindness

Ask what has changed recently. Have you lost a person, a community, or a sense of direction? Are your days so full that you rarely have quiet attention for anything? Have you withdrawn from people who know you? These questions can identify a practical next step without reducing faith to a mood.

Also leave room for honest repentance where there is a specific wrong to address. If you know you have harmed someone, take responsibility. But do not search endlessly for a hidden failure to explain every dry season. If low mood, numbness, or difficulty functioning extends beyond spiritual activities, appropriate professional support may be helpful alongside pastoral care.

Scripture in context

Open a passage to read the Bible text and its surrounding chapter here on AskJesus. The notes below explain how it connects with this question; they are reflections, not Bible quotations.

Psalm 13

This lament includes the experience of apparent distance, a direct request, and an expression of trust. Read its whole movement as a prayer to inhabit, not a timetable for feeling better.

Psalm 42

The Psalm gives voice to longing, sorrow, remembered worship, and hope. Its repeated questions show that faithful prayer can include an unsettled conversation within the person praying.

Hebrews 10:19-25

The passage connects drawing near to God with holding to hope and encouraging one another. Christian life is supported by shared faith and community, rather than private intensity alone.

What to do with this today

She reads an open Bible by the window.
A faithful next stepReturn to a small practice.

A brief reading or prayer can be enough for today without manufacturing an emotion.

  1. Pray the distance honestly

Say, ‘Father, I do not feel close to You right now. Help me keep turning toward You.’ Resist the urge to grade the prayer by how you feel immediately afterward. Honesty is already a meaningful place to begin.

  2. Read a manageable passage

Start with Psalm 13 or a short section of a Gospel. Ask what the passage says about God and what you do not understand. A few attentive minutes can be more useful than setting an ambitious routine you feel unable to sustain.

  3. Let one person know

Tell a trusted pastor or friend, ‘I’m finding faith difficult to feel connected to lately. Could we talk or pray together?’ Choose someone who can listen without treating every struggle as an obvious failure or offering certainty they cannot support.

  4. Practice one faithful action without demanding a feeling

Keep a promise, ask forgiveness, show care, or make space for worship with others. These actions do not earn God’s presence. They let you continue living your faith while your emotions are quiet and your questions remain open.

Pause & pray

A prayer for this moment

Father, You feel far away, and I do not want to pretend otherwise. Meet me in this honest prayer. Help me attend to Your word, receive the care of others, and recognize what needs attention in my life. Give me patience for a small, faithful beginning today. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

A question to sit with

What might I tell a trusted person about this season if I did not feel the need to sound spiritually strong?

Common questions

Does spiritual dryness mean I have lost my faith?

A season without strong spiritual feeling is not by itself evidence that faith is gone. Consider your questions and practices with someone trustworthy. Scripture includes people who turn toward God while expressing sorrow, confusion, and a sense of distance.

Should I force myself into a much longer devotional routine?

A larger routine is not automatically the right response. Begin with a practice you can approach attentively and honestly. Consider whether rest, support, a specific conversation, or a manageable reading habit would address what is actually happening.

A practical act of care can belong to a faithful life even when feelings remain quiet.
